Criminal Record Bureau News

Does your organisation work with children or vulnerable adults?  Do you use the CRB process?  Do you need the WNVCA to undertake your CRB checks for you?  You may find the following information helpful.

The Government has announced their intention to remodel the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) back to proportionate, commonsense levels. As a result, the ISA-registration stage of the scheme has been stopped and therefore will not launch on 26 July 2010 as planned.

Although the full details of this remodel are still to be finalised:

* It is business as usual for the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

* The elements of the VBS put in place back in October 2009 continue; and

* Existing requirements concerning the CRB will remain in place, and those entitled to such checks can continue to apply for them.

As a result of ISA-registration being stopped, the CRB has had to consider the impact on its application process. You will be aware that the CRB has recently provided Registered Bodies with an initial stock of new (purple) application forms in readiness for the planned launch of the ISA-registration phase in July, and although this phase of the VBS has now been halted, the CRB will still launch the new application form on 26 July as originally planned.

The CRB hopes that by introducing the new form as planned, it will reduce the inconvenience to our customers during this period. In order to process applications, the CRB will extract and ignore those parts of the new application forms which captures ISA registration requirements, and use only those data fields which are required to process a CRB check.

Information on CRB checks can be found at www.crb.gov.uk

New Identity Documents

There have been some additions to the list of identity documents which can be used for the identity checking process.  They are CRB Disclosure certificate (If issued within the last 12 months), a letter from a Head Teacher (less than 3 months old), an Asylum Registration Card and a document in a former name where both the birth certificate and document effecting the change of name are offered in support.  Please see the website www.crb.gov.uk/dip leaflet Dip 002.  Driving licences need to be produced with the photo card and the paper counterpart.

Retention of Disclosure Information

Criminal record information is only supplied for making a recruitment or other decision and once this has been made, the information must be disposed of securely.  You must not keep disclosure information for longer than is necessary.  This is generally for a period of up to 6 months which allows the consideration and resolution of any disputes or complaints.
