It can be thankless work but it can also be hugely rewarding – just ask anyone who gives up their time to volunteer.
There are over 500 registered charities in West Norfolk alone, most relying on the goodwill and generosity of the communities they serve to survive.
WNVCA (West Norfolk Voluntary and Community Action) works behind the scenes, matchmaking people with organisations who need their help.
“Anybody can volunteer – from teenagers right up to retired people.  Whether you want to make new friends, get work experience, give something back or use your time to help others, volunteering appeals to a wide range of people,” explained Chris England.
“All sorts of organisations rely on volunteers – from animal welfare charities, to lunch clubs, local sports teams, environmental conservation groups and community support organisations like Samaritans – and there’s always a shortage of volunteers.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can find out more from the WNVCA’s local office in 16 Tuesday Market Place, King's Lynn.

Opening hours are:
King’s Lynn: Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm. Call 01553 760568

Criminal Record Bureau News

Does your organisation work with children or vulnerable adults?  Do you use the CRB process?  Do you need the WNVCA to undertake your CRB checks for you?  You may find the following information helpful.

Information on CRB checks can be found at www.crb.gov.uk/dip.

New Identity Documents

There have been some additions to the list of identity documents which can be used for the identity checking process.  They are CRB Disclosure certificate (If issued within the last 12 months), a letter from a Head Teacher (less than 3 months old), an Asylum Registration Card and a document in a former name where both the birth certificate and document effecting the change of name are offered in support.  Please see the website www.crb.gov.uk/dip leaflet Dip 002.

Retention of Disclosure Information

Criminal record information is only supplied for making a recruitment or other decision and once this has been made, the information must be disposed of securely.  You must not keep disclosure information for longer than is necessary.  This is generally for a period of up to 6 months which allows the consideration and resolution of any disputes or complaints.

I had a telephone call in May from a lady who was considering voluntary work.

She had not worked for some time and was run down and suffering from a complete loss of confidence.

The lady came into Heacham Volunteer Centre for a volunteer interview.  She had excellent abilities and skills and I was able to get two placements for her within a very short space of time.

It is now four months later and she is still enjoying her time at both placements.

She feels it has all happened at just the right time for her. Her confidence has grown and she is enjoying meeting new people.  The voluntary work has brought meaning back to her life and is very worthwhile.

She says she was so pleased to get help and feels the Volunteer Centre has made things happen for her and given her support and encouragement.

She still has to challenge herself; she keeps fighting and pushing herself forward. She still has some difficulties around people, but has found her voluntary work an enormous help and has gained more self respect.
